One goal in each half allowed Lille to continue their revival with a comfortable win over relegation-threatened Strasbourg.
The Alsace side may have won their two UEFA Cup games to date, but they remain far too easy to beat in Ligue 1 and are still without a win after 14 matches. Following Metz’s victory on Saturday, Strasbourg are the only top-flight side yet to take three points this term.
Their defence was breached far too often by a Lille side oozing in confidence after their humbling of Manchester United in midweek.
Strasbourg’s backline creaked as early as the sixth minute, Jean Makoun releasing Peter Odemwingie who nipped past Jean-Christophe Devaux before firing a cross-hot beyond of the reach of Stéphane Cassard.
After a first half totally dominated by Lille, Strasbourg came out fighting in the second period and Alexander Farnerud struck a shot against the home team’s post in the 49th minute.
That was to prove the visitors’ only real chance, however, and Lille went on to wrap up the win with a second goal on 65 minutes, as Stefan Lichtsteiner’s miscued cross was blown cruelly beyond the reach of Cassard.
