Lille had Stathis Tavlaridis sent off in the first half but nonetheless claimed the three points against Nancy thanks to Hicham Aboucherouane’s goal.
Greek international Tavlaridis received his marching orders as early as the 24th minutes, leaving Lille, who played in the Champions’; League on Tuesday, with more than an hour to play with just 10 men.
Nancy never looked capable of breaking Claude Puel’s well-organised team down, however, and Lille eventually broke the deadlock shortly after the break. Mathieu Chalmé’s cross evaded the whole of the visitors defence, and Hicham Aboucherouane was on hand to prod home at the far post.
Nancy’s first serious effort on goal arrived on 71 minutes, but Tony Sylva pushed Michaël Chrétien’s shot wide of the post.
Matt Moussilou squandered several chances to seal Lille’s victory but Nancy lacked the potency necessary to score an equaliser.
