Ligue 1 Week 11 - 15/10/05 (19:00)
Bordeaux 1-1 Sochaux

Menez (S) 30, Alonso (B) 90

Stade Chaban-Delmas

Bordeaux missed a chance to keep the pressure on at the top of Ligue 1 with a 1-1 draw at home to struggling Sochaux.

And things could have been even worse if Argentinian ace Alejandro Alonso had not netted a last-gasp equaliser for the sub-par home side.

Sochaux came into the game with just two wins all season, floundering in the danger zone and their Coach under pressure, but they defended stoically and looked dangerous on the break.

Jean-Claude Darcheville and Denilson created openings for Les Girondins in the early stages, but they never looked likely to trouble Dominique Bijotat's troops, and there was nothing undeserved about Jérémy Menez's opener after he collected a pass from Araujo Ilan on the half-hour mark.

Ilan then had a chance to double the score-line and perhaps seal the result, but Ulrich Ramé was up to the task and kept his team in the game with a splendid save.

Defiant, Bordeaux came at their plucky visitors after the restart, with Rio Mavuba, Fernando and Vladimir Smicer at the heart of everything that was ambitious about their play.

It looked to most observers as if there efforts would come to nought, however, but they kept pushing and were finally rewarded when Alonso raced paced Jean Calvé and struck in from a tight angle.

There was immense relief around the Stade Chaban-Delmas, but Bordeaux now find themselves four points behind Lyon, who have played one match less. For all their brave efforts meanwhile, Sochaux remain in the bottom three.
