Rennes’ improved domestic form continued on Sunday, as a goal from Alexander Frei sunk Ajaccio in Corsica. The Swiss hitman pounced a minute before the interval to leave Ajaccio without a home win in two months.
Yet Ajaccio had looked the more dangerous side in the early stages, but Kamel Chafni squandered their best opening when he shot wide after half an hour.
Rennes posed the occasional threat on the counterattack and the outstanding Olivier Monterrubio was denied by Stéphane Porato on 38 minutes before Etienne Didot tested the Ajaccio ‘keeper again moments later.
Last season’s Ligue 1 top scorer has been in quiet form so far this term, but Frei showed he still has the knack of being in the right place at the right time in the 44th minute. Ajaccio failed to clear the ball from their penalty area and when it dropped kindly for Frei, the diminutive striker rifled home.
Ajaccio pushed hard after the break but their finishing was dreadful and Rennes ‘keeper Simon Pouplin barely had a save to make.
Marcelo Edson and Chafni both should have done better than shoot wide of the frame when well placed, but Rennes controlled the game in the final half an hour and sealed a deserved win.
