Ligue 1 Week 6 - 10/9/05 (19.00)
Ajaccio 1-0 Nancy
Lucas 9
Stade François-Coty

Nancy came back down to earth with a thud on Saturday, as they followed up their 6-0 win over Rennes with a 1-0 defeat by Ajaccio.

The Lorraine team have now lost five matches out of six and look sure to be facing a relegation struggle this season, despite the fireworks against Rennes a fortnight ago.

Ajaccio’s march up the table continues, meanwhile, as their Brazilian striker Waldir Perreira Lucas scored the only goal of a cagey encounter. Lucas made the most of some slack marking to head in André Luiz’s far-post cross on nine minutes.

André Luiz looked to double Ajaccio’s lead before the break, but his clever chip was not good enough to beat the Nancy ‘keeper Gennaro Bracigliano.

Elie Kroupi ran his socks off in the Nancy attack, but he was starved of service and the visitors could make no impression on the Ajaccio defence.

The home side looked the more likely to score in the second half, particularly when Daouda Jabi raced onto a loose ball and picked out Lucas inside the penalty area. This time the Brazilian’s finish was lacking as the ball flew over the bar.

It mattered little as the Corsican outfit, who remain unbeaten this season, sealed victory without any difficultly.
