Neither Ajaccio nor Le Mans showed enough adventure to claim the three points on Saturday, as their meeting in Corsica finished goalless.
Though both these teams were tipped to struggle in the summer, they have started the season in good fashion, with Ajaccio picking up five points and Le Mans four from their first three games.
They are both well organised in defence and, while this may ultimately keep them in Ligue 1 come May, it made for a dour spectacle tonight.
The first shot on target arrived in the 59th minute, which about sums about the nature of the match. Le Mans’ Chiguy Lucau found some space on the edge of the box and rifled a shot goalwards, only for Stéphane Porato to parry it with a neat save.
Ajaccio responded instantly, with Kaba Diawara sliding a pass through for Filho Lucas, only for the Brazilian to be denied by Yohann Pelé racing off his line. Pelé produced another good save from Romain Rocchi’s shot moments later, as Ajaccio scented victory.
But the more Ajaccio pushed forward, the more dangerous the visitors became. Lucau squandered one golden chance after a blunder from Ajaccio defender Daouda Jabi, then the Le Mans top-scorer De Melo sent a header fractionally over the bar from a corner as Ajaccio were caught sleeping.
