Thierry Henry amazingly insists he is just an "ordinary" striker. Arsenal's French superstar has won the World Cup, European Championship, two Premiership titles, two FA Cups, two Golden Boots and been voted World Footballer of the Year runner-up for the past two seasons. He has also helped Arsenal to their record-breaking 49-match unbeaten run and needs just 15 goals to smash Ian Wright's club record of 185.
A lot of people believe he is the greatest player in the world but, in an astonishing admission, modest Henry declared: "There have been some games when I have not been good enough - you could even say invisible. That is, maybe, in 10 out of 70 games, which isn't a bad average.
"But sometimes I get the feeling that everything I do is just ordinary. However, if the manager asked me not to play in a game I would say no because, for me, every match is important. You have to keep going and that's what I do. The manager might not put me on the team sheet for Cup games but that is something I accept. But when it comes to the Champions' League and the Premiership, I want to play every game. The last European match I missed was against Schalke three years ago because we had already qualified."
The man, who has also scooped both the players' and writers' Footballer of the Year accolades for the past two seasons, wants to break Wright's record to elevate himself out of the ordinary! Henry added: "Beating Ian Wright's record would not be ordinary, although you cannot even guess at the efforts required to get to that record.
"People have always talked about his record for the club and, if I beat that one day, it will be something truly extraordinary and another example of my regularity at this level. So when I retire it will be great to look back at those statistics as it will be something to be proud of. It will be good to leave an impression on the history of this club - and it's something I would love to do."
Arsenal have yet to win a European trophy since Henry arrived in the summer of 1999 and' the Frenchman has been accused of going missing in big games - despite scoring a club-record 35 goals in all European competitions. Henry declared: "I don't remember Arsenal winning any Champions' League match when I wasn't on top form.
"But it's difficult in the Champions' League to be good in every single one of the 13 matches up to the final." Henry admits he is still haunted by Arsenal's exit in the quarter-final stages against Chelsea last season. He recalled: "We had always beaten Chelsea but that time we lost because we conceded two unthinkable goals.
"We lost for the first time in 18 matches but we were unlucky that it was in the knockout stages of the Champions' League. But let's be clear - in Europe, Arsenal have not shown off the biggest trophy - and that is frustrating. We can beat anybody but, unfortunately, the opposite is also true. We have to improve in consistency because we can jump from winning one match 5-1 to losing the next 1-0 and that is something that does not happen at a club like Juventus. It may not always be spectacular but they succeed in holding on when they are off-form - we don't do that."
