French Focus: Pierre-Alain Frau (Lyon)

Such is the way that Paul Le Guen’s Lyon team played in the 2004/05 season – with fluid movement and regular interchanging of positions – that former Sochaux striker Frau could be seen patrolling the flanks, roaming in the centre-forward position and even dropping into midfield at the Stade Gerland.

The striker took a few months to settle at Lyon after his move from Sochaux, where he enjoyed a blistering 2003/04 campaign, scoring 17 Ligue 1 goals and a further four from five games in the UEFA Cup, including two against Inter.

Frau scored six times in his first 24 Lyon appearances in a side that share scoring duties around the team. He has a sharp turn of pace, a ferocious shot and also works hard for the team, holding up play well with his back to goal and tackling back when the opposition is in possession. With Giovane Elber leaving the club in disgrace, PAF, as Frau is nicknamed, could play an important role in Lyon’s future.
