French Focus: Frédéric Déhu (Marseille)

In May 2004, as PSG prepared to play the Final of the Coupe de France, word got out that their captain Frédéric Déhu had decided to quit the capital and join the club’s arch-rivals Marseille.

As a result, Déhu had to put up with incessant jeering throughout the Final from the supporters who had cheered him for four seasons.

Such is the level of Déhu’s mental strength, maturity and professionalism, he did not put a foot wrong all match as PSG fought off the Chateauroux challenge. After the game, veteran centre-back collected the trophy - with the deafening boos of his own fans ringing around the Stade de France - and retired straight to the dressing room.

Déhu was visibly saddened by the experience but his mind was already preparing for a new challenge on the Mediterranean coast.

After a cold send off, Déhu’s arrival at the Stade Vélodrome was met with more scepticism. An injury in his first game further delayed his acceptance by the Marseille faithful, but it wasn’t long before the tall stopper was marshalling OM’s back three or four with his customary authority.

One of the few Marseille players to have found consistency in an erratic season in 2004/05, Déhu’s performances shone through in a bleak year. What he lacks in pace he makes up for with an astute positional sense. A cultured defender, he can play both short and long passes, is rarely beaten in the air and reads the game brilliantly.
