Decimated by injuries, Laszlo Boloni's youthful Rennes side conceded two goals in the dying minutes against Bundesliga outfit Stuttgart.
Despite a nervous start, 20-year-old Simon Pouplin in the Rennes goal dealt with the considerable threat posed by Tomasson, Gronkjaer and Hitzlsperger.
After the break the Brittany side slowly came into the match and just as it looked as though they could snatch a winner Tomasson struck the opener on 88 minutes.
Former Strasbourg and PSG striker Daniel Ljuboja then added another two minutes later to complete a much-needed win for underfire Coach Giovanni Trapattoni.
