Rennes' abysmal UEFA Cup campaign finished with a 5-1 thrashing away to PAOK on Wednesday.
Laszlo Boloni’s side travelled to Thessalonica knowing that they had no chance of progressing to the last 32 after losing the first three games in Group G. But they failed to restore any pride as they were given a hiding by their Greek opponents, who had also been eliminated before kick off.
Alain Rochat started the farcical performance off by putting through his own net on four minutes, before Lazaros Hristodoulopoulos doubled the home team’s lead just shy of half-time.
France Under-21 striker Jimmy Briand netted Rennes first goal in Europe this season 20 minutes from time, but any hope the Brittany team had of securing a point soon evaporated.
Yiasoumi Yiasoumis scored quick-fire brace in the last 11 minute, with Dimitrios Salgipidis adding to the humiliation by scoring a goal himself in between.
Rennes must now pick themselves up against Saint-Etienne on Saturday.
