Marseille beat Dinamo Bucharest 2-1 to seal their third win in four matches and ensure they finish top of UEFA Cup Group F.
The 1993 European champions were missing several key players, including their in-form striker Mamadou Niang. That meant a start for the much-maligned Christian Gimenez on his own up front, supported by teenage playmaker Samir Nasri.
Already certain of qualification, the home side raced into a two-goal lead before half-time, although the sources of the goals were somewhat unusual. Serbian defender Bostjan Cesar netted the first on 39 minutes before Portuguese midfielder Delfim made it two in first-half added time.
Claudiu Niculescu halved the deficit for the Romanian side seven minutes after the break, but the visitors failed to find the equaliser they needed to go through.
Jean Fernandez’s team, meanwhile, extend their excellent run of form and by finishing top of the section ensure that they will be offered a relatively favourable draw in the next round.
