In front of a record 66,470 spectators for a Champions' League match in France, Lille upset former European Champions Manchester United 1-0 at the Stade de France on Wednesday.
Claude Puel's side came into the match on the back of a promising 0-0 draw at Old Trafford two weeks ago, but knew they'd have to go one better if they were to retain any realistic hope of qualifying for the knockout stages.
And after a nervy opening half-hour it was Lille that opened the mark on 38 minutes via their Slovenian midfielder Milenko Acimovic.
Against the run of play Geoffroy Dernis released his captain Grégory Tafforeau away down the left. Matt Moussilou made a run towards the front post and Tafforeau played a beautifully weighted pass in behind the striker where Acimovic strode on the ball and slammed it into the top right-hand corner of Edwin van der Sar's goal.
After the break Lille looked to go on with the job as they took control of the midfield courtesy of the outstanding duo Jean II Makoun and Mathieu Bodmer.
Tafforeau drew a superb fingertip save from Van der Sar with a wicked free-kick and Moussilou should have done better when he headed over from six yards after a cross from the impressive Mathieu Debuchy.
Manchester United's chances were few and far between but they almost stole a late equaliser when Ruud van Nistelrooy appeared to punch a Wayne Rooney corner onto the crossbar.
The win sees Lille move above United on direct goal-difference into second place with five points behind Spanish outfit Villarreal who defeated Benfica.
