Strasbourg were once again able to put their domestic troubles behind them in their short trip across the Swiss border.
Alexander Farnerud fired against the post before Amara Diané scored his first goal for the Alsace outfit with a header from an Arthur Boka cross on the quarter-hour.
Boka then got in on the act himself 10 minutes later with a thunderous free-kick which deflected off the wall and gave Zuberbuhler no chance.
Things were to get worse for Basel on 31 minutes when former Lyon defender Muller was sent-off for dragging back Diané as the last defender.
The Ligue 1 strugglers took their foot off the accelerator in the second half but could easily have extended their lead when Diané found the woodwork for a second time after 66 minutes of play.
