Sakho on trial at Bolton

Thursday 8 December, 2005

Saint-Etienne outcast Lamine Sakho has become the latest player to turn to the Premiership after struggling to cope with the rigours of Ligue 1.

Sakho has been invited for a trial with high-flyers Bolton, a club renowned for picking up players low on confidence and bringing out the best in them.

The former Lens forward, 28, has failed to establish himself with Les Verts, having previously played for Marseille and Leeds. He has made eight appearances in Ligue 1 this season but has not yet found the back of the net.

Should Sakho join Bolton he would team up with his great friend El Hadji Diouf, whom he once partnered in the Lens attack.

The move would also confirm a recent trend that has seen a host of borderline Ligue 1 players move to England in an attempt to ressurect their careers in recent months.

While the late 1990s saw the cream of French talent plying its trade in the Premiership, most are now prolonging their stays in Ligue 1, or moving to Spain or Italy.

The trend looks set to be reinforced with Thierry Henry rumoured to be on his way out of Arsenal next summer.

The Gunners lost their captain Patrick Vieira to Juventus six months ago - and unsettled Henry is attracting interest from Barcelona.

Liverpool's Djibril Cissé could also quit the Premiership, with Marseille keen to take him on loan this Christmas, while William Gallas is being linked with Barcelona and Juventus.

Meanwhile, Birmingham are looking to tie up a deal for Lens' reserve full back Yohan Lachor and Lamine Diatta has snubbed a move to England, preferring to fight for his place on the Lyon substitutes' bench.
