Lyon: Abidal statement Wednesday

Tuesday 6 December, 2005

French champions Lyon will reveal on Wednesday what measures they intend to take in the Eric Abidal case.

The France international left-back broke a metatarsal bone during the much-contested international friendly with Costa Rica last month, and Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas has threatened to sue FIFA over the injury.

"We're going to take a decision on Monday at a meeting of Lyon's administrative council," declared Aulas. "They will decide but our feeling now is that we should go to a tribunal in Lyon."

Meanwhile, Lyon lawyer Marino Faccioli restated the club's position and made it clear the Rhône outfit have no fears of taking on the world football governing body.

"We have lawyers working on arraigning FIFA for abuse of their position in terms of the rule forcing clubs to release players for international duty without compensation and without insurance costs," he said.

Abidal is expected to be sidelined for another two and a half months after breaking a bone in his left foot during France's friendly with Costa Rica in Martinique last month.

His club opposed the fixture when it was announced, complaining that it would be the seventh match he and his Lyon teammates contested in the space of 22 days.
