Auxerre win £4.7m compensation

Monday 5 December, 2005

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) have ordered Roma to pay Auxerre £4.7m in compensation for their illegal capture of Philippe Mexès.

The total fall slightly short of the £5.4m originally ordained by FIFA, but Roma's one-year transfer ban has also been upheld by the appeals body.

Mexès joined the Serie A side on a free transfer in the summer of 2004, despite the fact that his contract with Auxerre had yet to expire.

Roma appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport earlier this year after they were told that they could not sign any new players from July 1.

The Italian club did initially get that suspension lifted on August 8 – when the CAS temporarily suspended the ban pending the court's final decision.

That raising of the curtain allowed the club to complete the summer transfers of Shabani Nonda from Monaco, plus Samuel Kuffour and Rodrigo Taddei.

Mexès, a 23-year-old French international, also had to serve a six-week ban at the start of last season.
