Marseille chasing Adebayor

Monday 5 December, 2005

Marseille President Pape Diouf has admitted he is keen to bring in Monaco striker Emmanuel Adebayor during the winter mercato.

The Mediterranean outfit are desperate to reinforce their forward line given the disappointing performances of new signings Andres Mendoza and Christian Gimenez, and it is rumoured they would be willing to send defender Habib Beye in the opposite direction to seal the deal.

"You mention Adebayor, but it seems that Monaco aren't too keen to let him go," Diouf told reporters during half-time of OM's match against Nancy on Sunday.

"There's nothing concrete for the moment, we're just at the stage where we've made contact with them."

It is well known, however, that Marseille's first choice would be Djibril Cissé, and Diouf again restated his interest in the unsettled Liverpool striker.

"Cissé would obviously be an ideal recruit for us," he announced. "He's said himself that Marseille are made for him and we think he's a player who's made for us."

Fewer players are expected to be leaving the club than in the summer, when 21 packed their bags in total, but Diouf nonetheless revealed that defender Abdoulaye Méïté wants to move on.

"When a player isn't playing he has a tendency to want a transfer and I understand his position," explained the former agent. "We're not closing the door on him, that's for sure.

"He's a lad who has done a lot for this club over a number of years and he's perhaps a bit impatient. If an offer comes in for him that suits us, though, we won't be opposed to it."

Méïté joined Marseille in 2000, but has made just nine starts so far this term.
