Zidane could quit before 2007

Saturday 31 December, 2005

France captain Zinedine Zidane has revealed that he could hang up his boots before his contract with Real Madrid expires in 2007.

The 1998 World Cup winner has struggled for form this season and has also been plagued by a number of injuries in recent months.

"It's still not sure that I'll carry on until 2007," he told the Journal du Dimanche. "I've got another six months with Real, then the World Cup and we'll see after that."

The 33-year-old also shed more light on his return to Les Bleus in August, a decision which helped the national team secure a place in Germany next summer.

"It wasn't just to earn qualification that I did it," he said. "This side has the players to do something. I have no doubt about that. Our players are at the best clubs in Europe.

"I'm convinced we're not missing much in terms of finding that little extra something which can take us very far.

"We have to do everything we can to find it, because this will be the last competition for players like me."
