Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has welcomed the results of a national opinion poll which reveal his club are now France’s most popular.
According to the nationwide poll conducted by the newspaper ‘Aujourd’hui En France’ Lyon have overtaken traditional powerhouses Marseille, Paris Saint-Germain and Saint-Etienne in the hearts of the country’s football fans.
“It’s the first time that we’ve come first across the entire country,” revealed Aulas.
“All the hardwork is paying off.
“But it’s only the beginning. It took a long time to get there and we intend to stay there for a long time.
“Some teams draw on a bigger population and others have a bigger trophy cabinet than us.
“But today, people are living in the present and presented with a club that has history and one that’s getting results, they’ll choose the one that’s shining now.
“At the end of Real Madrid v Lyon, Zinedine Zidane and some Madrid supporters came up to me to congratulate me on the team.
“In Paris I get stopped with ‘I’m a PSG fan but what you’re doing at Lyon is incredible. Lyon are doing us all proud.’”
