Marseille have taken former Bordeaux defender Jérôme Bonnissel on trial as they look for a temporary replacement for Taye Taiwo.
The experienced left-back has been without a club since he quit Fulham last season and Marseille boss Jean Fernandez (pictured) believes he could provide important back up.
“It’s an interesting opportunity,” Fernandez said. “He is the kind of player we are looking for because Taiwo is going to the African Cup of Nations and we are not sure that Koji Nakata will be staying.”
While Taiwo is set to represent Nigeria in Egypt next month, Japan international Nakata could join Betar Jerusalem or return to his homeland as he goes in search of regular football ahead of the World Cup.
Bonnissel, 32, has had major injury problems in recent times but is fit again and possesses plenty of experience.
As well as playing in France for Montpellier and Bordeaux, he has represented Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna, Scotland’s Glasgow Rangers and Premiership outfit Fulham.
