Paris Saint-Germain President Pierre Blayau has appointed Guy Lacombe as the club’s new Coach after sacking Laurent Fournier.
Blayau called for a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, and confirmed that reports in the French press claiming that Fournier had run out of time were true.
The former PSG defender lasted just 11 months in the post after replacing Vahid Halilhodzic, initially on a part-time basis, in January.
PSG are currently just one point off second spot, but have gained on average only 1.61 points per game under Fournier.
Lacombe takes charge with immediate affect and Blayau was quick to stress that the former Sochaux boss was not a last resort after Paul Le Guen turned down another approach from the capital club.
“We don’t pick a Coach by default,” Blayau declared. “There were several possibilities. Guy Lacombe has enthusiasm and determination, as well as the desire to come and help us.
“His experience and track record is good. He has won trophies and has experience of taking teams into Europe.”
Blayau, who admitted that he had made an offer to former Lyon trainer Le Guen, said that Lacombe’s challenge was to guide PSG into next season’s Champions’ League and to get them challenging for the French title as quickly as possible.
Lacombe quit Sochaux last summer and had been working as a pundit for television network Canal Plus.
Blayau appears to have favoured the former Cannes, Toulouse and Guingamp boss to Didier Deschamps, who is also out of work following his acrimonious departure from Monaco.
The 50-year-old is renowned for working well with young players, having guided Zinedine Zidane and Patrick Vieira through the youth set-up at Cannes, before developing an exciting young side at Sochaux in more recent times.
