Wenger hopeful of Pires deal

Tuesday 27 December, 2005

Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger is hopeful that he will reach an agreement with Robert Pires when the two sit down for contract talks next week.

The France midfielder's current deal runs out in the summer, which means he is entitled to talk to other clubs from January 1.

"Robert is an important player, and has done tremendously well for us," said Wenger, who signed Pires from Marseille in 2000. "He has always been a big part of our team.

"He is in and out [at the moment], but you expect that during this period, and at that age sometimes as well you need a breather."

Wenger added: "In January, we will sit together. We will try to have a good chat."

Pires has already turned down the offer of a one-year extension, with the 32-year-old holding out for at least two additional years.

On the length of the deal likely to be discussed, the Arsenal Coach added: "Up to now, yes [one year has been the policy for players over 30] - but you can always have exceptions."
