Fergie ends Saha speculation

Sunday 25 December, 2005

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has put an end to rumours that Louis Saha could be sold in January, describing the Frenchman’s return to fitness as “a big bonus”.

Reports in the English press suggested that United must reduce their wage bill following their premature exit from Europe.

But when asked if Saha was staying at Old Trafford, Ferguson replied: "Absolutely. A fit Louis Saha will get us goals.

"The boy has been really unlucky with injuries but we know what he is capable of when he is fit, so having him back after another four or five months out is a big bonus,” he added.

Saha has missed much of the past 18 months through injury, but marked his latest comeback with a double strike against Birmingham City in the Carling Cup quarter-final last week.

United signed the 27-year-old from Fulham for £12.8m two years ago but after a promising start Saha has been blighted by fitness problems.

West Ham United are believed to be ready to pay around £8m to bring the former Metz striker back to the English capital.

Saha, who has scored two goals in eight games for France, will be anxious to impress Les Bleus boss Raymond Domenech ahead of next summer’s World Cup.
