Wenger slams 'meddling' Barca

Thursday 22 December, 2005

Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger has hit out at Barcelona President Joan Laporta over comments he made about Thierry Henry.

With the Gunners in the middle of their worst run of form since Wenger took over nine years ago, rumours that Henry is on his way to Barcelona in the summer has added to the uncertainty at the north London club.

Wenger is furious that Laporta fanned the flames by stating the Catalan club "will do all we can to sign Thierry Henry" in the summer.

"Laporta cannot make a statement like that,” Wenger fumed. “It shows a lack of respect. I will try to do something about it.

"If they want to sign Thierry they have to call us because he is under contract for another 18 months."

The France striker has so far refused to discuss a new deal at Arsenal. Should the stand off continue next summer, Arsenal risk losing the 28-year-old for nothing when his current deal expires in 2007.

Wenger went on to insist that there is a correct way to make an approach for a player and claimed Barcelona's methods are "unsettling".

"I feel every chairman, be it from Doncaster or Barcelona, should respect the rules in football,” he said.

"I'm not worried about Thierry being unsettled. I just think it is negative publicity for Arsenal and we don't need that."
