Kluivert joins OM wish list

Wednesday 21 December, 2005

Out-of-favour Valencia striker Patrick Kluivert has joined Djibril Cissé, Marco Di Vaio and Maxi Lopez on the list of Marseille transfer targets.

Marseille sports director José Anigo confirmed that the club are interested in the Dutchman on Wednesday.

He added: ”We have several possibilities. We will try to bring in a big name.

“But we have known the rules from the start. If we sell we can buy, if we don’t sell we can’t buy.”

Anigo has made it clear that two of the club’s summer recruits, Andres Mendoza and Christian Gimenez, could be sacrificed after scoring just one goal between them.

Coach Jean Fernandez (pictured) will also lose the services of Senegal forward Mamadou Niang when the African Cup of Nations begins next month.

But former head Coach Anigo reacted defensively to criticism of the club’s transfer policy. “Other clubs have also made mistakes in the transfer market,” Anigo snapped.

“Look at Benoit Pedretti and Pierre-Alain Frau at Lyon. At the time when we bought (Mendoza and Gimenez), we didn’t have the funds to do anything else,” he added.

Kluivert’s career continues to spiral downwards at an alarming rate. A European Cup winner with Ajax in 1995, he joined Valencia in the summer after a failed spell with Newcastle.

Life has not improved for the former Barcelona ace this season. He has started just one match for Valencia and is yet to score on his return to La Liga.
