Laurent Fournier will be given a stay of execution by PSG President Pierre Blayau providing tonight’s Coupe de la Ligue clash with Toulouse does not turn into “a fiasco”.
Blayau has made threatening noises regarding the Coach’s future over the last 10 days, but he now appears unlikely to sack the trainer before Christmas after calling Fournier and his players in for a meeting on Tuesday.
According to Le Parisien newspaper, Blayau made it clear that the former PSG defender will remain in charge in the new year unless the club are embarrassed in tonight’s match at the Municipal Stadium.
It is also understood that Blayau has been swayed by Paul Le Guen’s refusal to return to management. Blayau was keen for the former Lyon boss to replace Fournier, but Le Guen would prefer to make his return next summer.
Fournier remains in philosophical mood. “If this turns out to be my last game then I wish everyone good luck for the future,” he said. “I’ve been putting up with this situation for 10 days, so I’m starting to get used to it.”
The PSG players have been unanimous in their support of Fournier, who replaced Vahid Halilhodzic at the start of the year.
He steered the club up the table in the second half of last season and they are currently sixth, just one point off second.
