Auxerre boss Jacques Santini could only congratulate Nancy for showing his team how to play in Saturday's 1-0 defeat.
Moncef Zerka's 5th-minute penalty put paid to the Burgundy club's hopes of closing the gap on leaders Lyon, and they slipped down to third following Bordeaux's goalless draw with Nantes.
"[Nancy] demonstrated all the qualities a team needs to succeed: solidarity, simplicity and a lot of sacrifice," noted the former France Coach. "That wasn't the case with my team.
"Now we're third and we're going to have to show our quality and stop being complacent. When I talk about quality, I mean humility because you have to keep asking yourselves questions in football. That wasn't the case of my players."
Club captain Philippe Violeau was also disappointed with the result, and lamented the fact he and his teammates conceded such an early goal.
"It was a huge blow," he explained. "We got off to a terrible start. But we still have to stay positive because we've achieved a lot since the season began.
"Nonetheless, with a bit more application we could have had a few more points by now. We're not going to get down but at some point you have to be more demanding because that's the only way to get results.
"We just weren't demanding enough with ourselves in this game."
