Rennes boss Laszlo Boloni put on a brave face after watching his team lose their final UEFA Cup pool game 5-1 away to PAOK Salonika.
The Brittany outfit had already been eliminated from the competition, but any hopes they had of restoring some pride were blown away in dramatic fashion on Greek soil.
"In spite of the result, I was happy about a few things in this match," commented an upbeat Boloni. "Two or three players surprised me and I'm happy with their performance.
"I'm thinking about [Arnold] Mvuemba, [Jimmy] Briand, [Laszlo] Sepsi and [Grégory] Bourillon, who had a courageous game.
"We showed a lot of naivety, but I'd like to congratulate PAOK's Coach [Georgios Kostikos] for the win and their efficiency in front of goal. That’s something we didn't have.
"We made a lot of mistakes in defence and, after the third goal, our morale dropped. It was a difficult night and I have to say I don't think we have a good enough mentality for European competition."
Boloni must now lift his troops before they face Saint-Etienne on Saturday.
