Ajaccio boss Rolland Courbis is adamant that the Corsican club can avoid relegation despite their dismal run of form.
Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Nice extended their winless record to 12 matches, leaving them six points adrift of Troyes and a position of safety.
Courbis, though, insists they should not be in such a position, claiming that their recent 1-0 defeat by Troyes was not justified.
“That result effectively cost us six points in 90 minutes," he fumed. "We had a valid goal disallowed and then an obvious penalty ignored. Eventually we concede a goal on the counter and today we find ourselves six points behind Troyes, instead of being level with them.”
The former Marseille boss is staying positive, however. “The situation is complicated but it is not desperate,” Courbis said. “So long as there is a mathematical chance I will believe.
“I could add to the pessimism and say that we are not capable of getting out of this. I could say that we are dead if this bad run continues.
“It’s obvious that staying up will be impossible if we remain so ineffective both in attack and in defence.
“But if we need 40 points to stay up, then that’s 28 in 20 matches. Are we capable of getting that? I don’t know.”
Ajaccio host Paris Saint-Germain next weekend, the last matchday before the winter break.
