Fernandez makes Cissé gaffe

Sunday 11 December, 2005

Marseille boss Jean Fernandez made an intriguing slip of the tongue last night when he implied that Djibril Cissé has already agreed a move to the Stade Vélodrome.

During an interview with television station Canal Plus after Marseille's 1-0 win over Auxerre, Fernandez was quizzed on the possibility of the Liverpool striker joining Marseille on loan this Christmas.

The former Metz boss appeared to suffer a lapse in concentration as he slipped into the present tense. “It is an honour to have him at our club," Fernandez declared.

He had previously said only that the two clubs had been in contact, but claimed he did not know if an agreement would be reached.

“I don’t about know everything that has gone on, but I know that we need a striker,” Fernandez said. “I would be happy to have Djibril Cissé. He’s a great player with huge potential.”

Mamadou Niang's second-minute strike helped Marseille to their third consecutive home win on Saturday, moving them sixth in the table.
