Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has apologised to Dietmar Hamann for his horror tackle in last week’s Champions’ League clash with Liverpool.
The former Lyon star is facing a UEFA charge for gross unsporting conduct, but has moved to repair his relationship with the German international.
"Michael has spoken to Dietmar by telephone," said a Chelsea spokesman. "He apologised to Dietmar, assured him the tackle was accidental and that there was no malicious intent."
The 23-year-old caught Hamann just below the knee and the Liverpool midfielder will now miss the home clash against Middlesbrough.
Chelsea are still expected to appeal against UEFA’s charge but must do so before December 14.
Hamann had earlier been critical of Essien for not apologising. "Nobody from Chelsea has said anything to me and Essien hasn't apologised or anything like that," he said.
