The mayor of Paris Bertrand Delonoë revealed his limited knowledge of French football when he visited Paris Saint-Germain training on Thursday.
At the end of a light training session at PSG’s Camp des Loges, Delonoë was introduced to the capital players by captain Pedro Pauleta.
“This is David Rozehnal,” said the Portuguese hitman. “He comes from Bruges and speaks English.”
Pauleta then introduced the head of the Paris 2012 Olympic bid to French international Vikash Dhorasoo.
“And this is Vikash, who comes to us from Milan.”
“And do you speak French?” asked Delonoë.
“Well, actually, I am French,” responded the bemused player.
Delonoë told the squad that he had abandoned plans to relocate the club’s training facilities to within the city limits of Paris, confirming that the proposed construction of a new training complex is still planned for the suburb of Poissy in the neighbouring Yvelines department.
“I spoke to President Pierre Blayau about it,” said the mayor. “The players need the calmness and tranquillity of a quiet area to train.”
The Paris Mayor’s office contributes around £2.6m per year to the running of the club.
