Serie A Week 5 - 28/9/08 (14.00 UK)
Udinese 2 - 1 Siena
Quagliarella 22 (U), Pepe 29 (U), Kharja 38 (S)
Stadio Friuli

Udinese got two goals in the opening half-hour to sink Siena in an entertaining ecounter.

The battle of the Bianconeri saw the Friulani trying to finally hit their stride after an inconsistent start. Antonio Di Natale was back after a flu virus, though Cristian Zapata and Dias Felipe remained sidelined. Siena were unbeaten since the opening weekend and could count on the experience of Valerio Bertotto, who wore the Udinese jersey for 11 years.

Gianluca Curci seemed a little shaky when punching crosses from his former Roma youth team colleagues Simone Pepe and Gaetano D'Agostino.

Udinese broke through with their star strikers combining on 22 minutes. Di Natale found acres of space as he sprung the offside trap down the left flank and cut back for a simple Fabio Quagliarella tap-in. However, replays suggest Quagliarella was offside when Di Natale got the ball and as he then put it into the net, was interfering with play.

The trident combined again soon after for the second goal. This time Quagliarella turned provider, chesting down the ball with his back to goal to send Simone Pepe clear down the right to nutmeg the goalkeeper.

There was tension when Marco Motta's throw-in was meant to be for the Siena players after they had put the ball out for treatment, but Quagliarella forgot and forced a great save out of Curci. Before the Siena players could complain further, the resulting corner was kicked straight out for a goal kick.

Siena got a goal back moments later. First Samir Handanovic denied Daniele Galloppa from close range, then Massimo Maccarone's angled drive thumped the inside of the far post and Houssine Kharja stumbled on to the loose ball for a tap-in.

Udinese really should've been 3-1 up on 65 minutes, as Di Natale crossed for the totally unmarked Pepe, who thought he had considerably more time than he did and the hesitation allowed Rossi to rush in from behind to clear.

Maccarone's touched-on free kick whistled past the upright and the former Middlesbrough man threaded through for substitute Mario Frick, who horribly scuffed his finish.
