Roma's dismal campaign continues with a third away defeat, which had already been sealed before Philippe Mexes and Christian Panucci were sent off. This means both defenders will be suspended for the next game with Inter.
The Giallorossi needed to prove their crisis was over after not entirely convincing wins over Atalanta and Bordeaux, as they were trailing the 10-man French side until a late flurry of goals. Injuries remained a problem with Francesco Totti, David Pizarro, Mirko Vucinic, Marco Cassetti and Max Tonetto out of action.
Luciano Spalletti's men lost both their away games in Serie A, conceding six goals, and had bad memories of a 3-0 drubbing here last season. The Tuscans were without Brandao, Nicola Belmonte, Nando Forestieri or Cosmin Moti, but were undefeated on home turf without conceding a single goal and had lost just one of their last 11 games at the Stadio Franchi Arena Montepaschi.
Houssine Kharja had timid penalty appeals waved away for the slightest of contacts with Alberto Aquilani. Roma took a while to get going and had their first chance after 20 minutes with a Jeremy Menez cross missing both Perrotta and Julio Baptista.
However, there was real danger when Siena broke from a Roma corner kick and a desperate Philippe Mexes clearance prevented a goal. At the other end Simone Perrotta spread the play for former Siena star Rodrigo Taddei, whose strike was parried by ex-Roma goalkeeper Curci.
Baptista's free kick was just over, but Daniele De Rossi wasted a golden opportunity on 36 minutes. He was sent clear by a Menez through ball and dribbled round Curci, but took it too far and could only hit the side-netting of an empty net.
Siena took the lead in first half stoppages. Massimo Maccarone rolled a ball across for Mario Frick to side-foot home from seven yards, as the Roma defence was caught napping on the counter-attack.
In the second half Taddei scuffed a volley at the goalkeeper and Curci parried a Menez effort at the near post. Alexandre Doni also required a fine save to deny Maccarone's angled drive and then was almost caught by surprise on another Maccarone effort, as it bounced out of his hands.
Siena had the best chances and Kharja clipped the crossbar with a cross-shot, but Roma went down to 10 men. Philippe Mexes received a second booking for dissent, as he threw the ball away in anger.
Incredibly, the Giallorossi ended the match with nine men, as Christian Panucci clattered into Ghezzal to stop a counter. Both Panucci and Mexes will be suspended for the next round against Inter.
