Emanuele Calaio' and debutant Ghezzal sank a dismal Cagliari side in Tuscany.
Siena boss Marco Giampaolo came face to face with the club that fired him twice in the last two seasons. The Sardinians were probably regretting that decision all over again after their dismal start, a 4-1 home defeat to Lazio. Daniele Conti, Marco Pisano and the suspended Diego Lopez didn't make the trip, but star Siena striker Massimo Maccarone began a three-match ban for pushing the referee.
In their 13 previous meetings in Tuscany, Cagliari had managed only two wins, the most recent in the 1961-62 Serie C tournament.
Siena broke through after 10 minutes when a Houssine Kharja corner kick was flicked on by Daniele Portanova for Emanuele Calaio' to tap in from four yards.
Mario Frick tested Marchetti's reflexes with a right-foot snapshot and on 31 minutes the goalkeeper did very well to prod a Calaio' header on to the base of the upright.
On the stroke of half-time Ficagna had a goal ruled out in controversial fashion. He jumped to head the ball and nudged Ferri, which for the referee was enough to disallow Siena's advantage.
Straight after the restart Cagliari hit the back of the net, but this too was disallowed for a very tight offside position, as Jeda appeared to be level when running on to the Andre Cossu through ball to set up Joaquin Larrivey.
Larrivey incredibly managed to miss from six yards in front of an open goal, as he ankled Agostini's cross over the bar under no pressure whatsoever!
Ghezzal scored on his Serie A debut deep into stoppages to secure Siena's 2-0 victory, as he only had to sidefoot in Forestieri's pass from seven yards.
