Lecce made up for their Week 1 defeat by conquering Chievo at the Stadio Via del Mare, including Jose Castillo's debut Serie A goal.
The two top flight new boys went head to head and Lecce had a point to prove after their drubbing at Torino. This fixture ended 3-0 for the Salentini last season in Serie B and Chievo hadn't even scored at the Via del Mare in the three meetings since their 2-1 win in September 2003.
The visitors had to do without the suspended Antonio Langella. It was a special encounter for Sergio Pellissier and Simone Tiribocchi, who were teammates in the Torino youth squad many moons ago.
Daniele Cacia had a great chance after 60 seconds, his flick from a corner nearly squirming past the goalkeeper at the base of the near post. A header from the former Fiorentina striker went just wide.
Tiribocchi thought he had given Lecce the lead with an angled drive, but it was correctly ruled out for an offside position.
Luciano's volley flew over the bar on 25 minutes from seven yards on Mantovani's cross from the right.
Lecce were repeatedly caught offside by the Chievo trap and Sergio Pellissier went close to an opener before the break with his header into the ground from a Luciano cross and Vincenzo Italiano's snapshot was deflected wide.
The Salentini finally broke through 90 seconds after the restart. Fabio Caserta finalised a well-worked move, as he was totally unmarked at the back post to get on the end of a Guillermo Giacomazzi cross headed back across the face of goal.
Mauro Esposito was introduced for Chievo and immediately skimmed the woodwork with his header from a corner kick. Luca Ariatti turned Giacomazzi's long pass into the path of Cacia, but the youngster was just a second too late to slide on to the ball.
Substitute Castillo scored his first Serie A goal to put an end to Chievo's hopes. The former Pisa hitman was left criminally unmarked in the centre to control Tiribocchi's cross and chip it over the goalkeeper.
