Gianvito Plasmati put a spanner in the works with this shock draw in Turin that sends Juventus two points adrift of the top spot.
The Bianconeri topped the table alongside Inter going into this midweek round and hoped to continue their solid, yet unspectacular, form. Amauri made the most of his chances by scoring the only goal in their last two games against Udinese and Cagliari.
Claudio Ranieri made seven changes to his last line-up. With David Trezeguet, Mauro Camoranesi, Cristiano Zanetti, Jonathan Zebina and Gigi Buffon sidelined, Amauri again got a start with the returning Alessandro Del Piero and Sebastian Giovinco's first appearance of the campaign.Catania got over their anger at Inter by beating Atalanta on Saturday and were just one point shy of the leaders. Gionatha Spinesi and Carboni remained on the injury table.
Catania had a strong start and Silvestre ballooned over with the inside of his left foot from six yards, relatively undisturbed. Llama's cross-shot swerved inches past the far top corner.
But it was Juventus who broke through with Amauri's third goal in as many Serie A games. The Brazilian rose between two central defenders to place a precise header into the bottom near corner from Giovinco's fine cross.
The Sicilians fought back immediately with Mariano Izco's sudden snapshot testing Alex Manninger, but Giovinco was on sparkling form and very popular with the fans in Turin.
Del Piero had a goal ruled out for offside, while Catania brought a fine save out of Manninger with Marco Biagianti's screamer.
A left-foot Giovinco snapshot was saved low by Bizzarri and after the break Catania switched to a 4-4-2 with substitute Gianvito Plasmati. Ledesma tripped Giovinco right on the edge of the box, but Del Piero's free kick was off target.
On 52 minutes Juve went so close, as a Marco Marchionni cross from the right whistled just past Del Piero's head and Amauri came sliding in to turn it just wide from six yards.
A spectacular Giovinco trap and spin in the box brought a wonderful reaction save out of Bizzarri's outstretched foot.
Catania equalised after a double defensive howler. Both Nicola Legrottaglie and Giorgio Chiellini failed to make contact with a Giacomo Tedesco cross from the left, leaving Plasmati totally unmarked for a free header from six yards! It was his second goal of the season, the first was scored at San Siro against Inter.
There was an incredible double chance on 70 minutes. Del Piero's header from a Giovinco cross cracked against the crossbar and as it ricocheted on to the head of Amauri, that too hit the woodwork!
Giovinco again combined with Del Piero for a shot deflected out for a corner. From the resulting set play Del Piero dribbled to the by-line and his cutback entered a sea of legs, but somehow didn't cross the line from a yard.
Amauri went to the by-line too to test Bizzarri from the tightest of angles and Legrottaglie turned over from point-blank range.
The referee awarded five minutes of stoppages and the siege continued with Amauri just failing to turn in Pavel Nedved's cross. Bizzarri captured a Hasan Salihamidzic header from a corner kick.
