| Furious Roma are back in trouble as Diego Milito bagged a brace, but Christian Panucci had a goal incorrectly disallowed and Daniele De Rossi saw red. The Giallorossi got back on track at the weekend with a 3-0 demolition of Reggina, their first win of the season between domestic and European competition. Francesco Totti was again sidelined along with Juan, Max Tonetto, David Pizarro, Julio Baptista and Marco Cassetti, with Philippe Mexes still only on the bench. Genoa had Andrea Gasbarroni back in shape with the free-scoring Diego Milito and former Roma star Matteo Ferrari. Mirko Vucinic nodded wide from a corner in the opening minute, but it was Genoa who took the lead in curious circumstances. John Arne Riise was caught napping as Giuseppe Sculli stole in to flick Gasbarroni's ball over Alexandre Doni from six yards. On 23 minutes Daniele De Rossi's ball over the top was cleared as far as Rodrigo Taddei, whose deflected effort bounced just past the far post. Roma managed to equalise after piling on the pressure. A Cicinho free kick found De Rossi's header to test Rubinho and the World Cup winning midfielder pounced on the loose ball from six yards to finish the job. Simone Loria's sliding tackle stopped Diego Milito from pulling the trigger in a one-on-one. After the restart Riise was again shaky when Sculli couldn't get enough power to his header from Modesto's cross. Milito netted his third goal in as many games this season to restore Genoa's advantage. The set piece was only cleared as far as the edge of the box and when it was put back in the Roma offside trap failed to catch Milito. Christian Panucci put the ball in the back of the net, but it was ruled out for an offside position. It was a bizarre decision, as replays show he was clearly kept in play by Matteo Ferrari. The linesman may have been confused by a deflection, which was off a Genoa player, so it could not have activated the offside trap. Roma were furious with the referee again moments later, as De Rossi was sent off for a tackle from behind on Gasbarroni, his second bookable offence. Ruben Olivera's free kick and another Milito attempt went close, but Alberto Aquilani almost equalised for 10-man Roma with a diving header. Just as the Giallorossi were piling forward, Milito finished the job by taking advantage of Loria's mistake to tap in a Palladino low ball across the face of goal. Loria really should've cleared that up, as the ball rolled right in front of him. |
