Chievo fought back from a goal down to win on their return to the top flight.
The Flying Donkeys returned to Serie A after a year in purgatory and needed a good start after their shock Coppa Italia exit to Third Division Padova last week. Bernardo Corradi made his top flight Reggina debut against the club where he shot to fame in 2002, but teammates Franco Brienza, Ciccio Cozza and Antonio Giosa were out injured.
Bentivoglio's screamer whistled wide after seven minutes, but Iunco horribly wasted a golden opportunity moments later. He was totally unmarked on Sergio Pellissier's cutback, but got the ball stuck between his feet and allowed Campagnolo to save with an outstretched leg.
A free kick was rolled to the byline for Marco Malago' who cut back for Mandelli, but practically on the line Campagnolo managed to smother. Vigiani's header from a corner kick flashed across the face of goal.
Campagnolo had his palms stung by Pellissier at the near post, while Corradi wasted a good chance after the break, as his first touh let him down.
Reggina did precious little at the Bentegodi, but took the lead with their first chance. Cesar was penalised for a foul in the box on Corradi and the former Chievo star converted the penalty under the bar.
However, just five minutes later the referee pointed to the spot at the other end of the field. Antonio Langella clashed with Tognozzi when jumping for the ball, but it seemed a rather soft decision. Nonetheless, Michele Marcolini converted to equalise.
Campagnolo continued his heroics by turning Pellissier's attempt out for a conrer, but after such a good performance he was caught out horribly by a Vincenzo Italiano drive that squirmed in at the near post after a terrible attempt at a save.
Yet Corradi could've equalised again 60 seconds later, as Lorenzo Squizzi came flying out to confront Corradi and Malago' slid in to clear off the line. Reggina wanted a penalty, as the goalkeeper did not appear to make contact with the ball.
There was tension in stoppages and Langella was shown a straight red card for his senseless tackle on Valdez in midfield.
