Catania fought back from an early goal to cut short Cagliari's fine form.
These teams had wildly differing starts to the campaign, but with Cagliari's revival and Catania's sudden drop in form it reminded everyone this would be a relegation dogfight come the final weeks. One point from their last three games meant the Sicilians were feeling the pressure, but a 5-1 victory over Bologna boosted the Sardinians' confidence. Michele Fini returned from a ban but Davide Biondini was suspended, while Gionatha Spinesi, Nicolae Dica, Cristian Llama and Pablo Alvarez were injured.
Cagliari took a shock lead just six minutes in thanks to a howler from goalkeeper Albano Bizzarri. Nelson Jeda rose for a looping header from a corner kick and the shot-stopper assumed it was going out, so did not even attempt a save, but it dipped into the top corner!
Bizzarri made another horrible mistake soon after, his clearance going straight to Jeda, but the snapshot was too short to take advantage. Robert Acquafresca tested the goalkeeper from distance, too.
Catania got themselves level on 37 minutes thanks to Giuseppe Mascara, who turned in the box and his angled drive took a deflection to leave Marchetti stranded.
Sabato was caught napping and Matheu was able to cross for an Acquafresca volley inches off target.
After the restart Mascara's volley from outside the box dipped on to the roof of the net, but Giacomo Tedesco wasted a golden opportunity set up for him by Martinez, firing the left-foot finish wide.
Plasmati was brought down on the edge of the box and Rocco Sabato thumped a low missile through the defensive wall to surprise Marchetti and give Catania the lead four minutes from time.
