Serie A Week 11 - 8/11/08 (19.30 UK)
Bologna 1 - 1 Roma
Totti 69 (R), Cicinho og 91 (B)
Stadio Dall'Ara

A spectacular Cicinho own goal gave Sinisa Mihajlovic a 1-1 draw on his Bologna debut, but Roma shot themselves in the foot.

It was a clash between two teams on the verge of a nervous breakdown, as the Rossoblu made their debut under Sinisa Mihajlovic after losing eight of their 10 games with Daniele Arrigoni in charge. Sergio Volpi, Christian Amoroso, Mingazzini, Davide Bombardini and Mingazzini were ruled out.

Roma had lost their last four Serie A matches - including every away game - in their worst start for over 30 years, but were revived in unexpected fashion midweek with a 3-1 Champions League triumph over Chelsea. Luciano Spalletti unveiled a new rhombus midfield in that tie and used it again with Alberto Aquilani injured. Christian Panucci was able to start despite his recurring knee injury flaring up during the warm-up. Francesco Totti celebrated his 400th Serie A appearance.

Bologna should've taken the lead after eight minutes, but when Alexander Doni parried Marchini's snapshot into the path of Marco Di Vaio, the striker incredibly failed to get hold of the loose ball from seven yards. The move continued and Francesco Valiani also stumbled in a promising position.

Simone Perrotta and Gaby Mudingayi clashed inside the box, but the referee waved play on. The Roma midfielder seemed to sprain his knee in that move, but was able to carry on.

Cicinho's cross flashed across the face of goal with Totti unable to take advantage of a Moras error. Daniele De Rossi blasted over with his weaker left-foot from distance.

Mirko Vucinic had a golden opportunity to break through on 34 minutes when David Pizarro pounced on a loose ball and put it to the back post, but the Montenegrin scuffed it horribly right into Francesco Antonioli's arms.

Vucinic made another dreadful mistake moments later by ballooning over from the penalty spot after Cicinho's cutback.

A splendid Matteo Brighi trap and volley was smothered by Antonioli, but at the other end a Martins Adailton cross-shot whistled past Valiani unmarked from eight yards.

Di Vaio went on a promising counter-attack, skipping past two tackles to curl wide of the far post.

Roma pinned Bologna back in the final minutes of the first half, but Panucci had his shot charged down.

Philippe Mexes picked up a thigh problem just before the break and was replaced by Max Tonetto in the second half. Adailton curled well over from outside the box, then Perrotta prodded a Tonetto cross wide of the near post with the inside of his right foot.

Bologna wanted a penalty for a De Rossi handling offence, but the ball clearly ricocheted off his thigh and on to his hand, so it could not be a voluntary gesture.

The Rossoblu were more dangerous in this second half and Doni bravely flung himself at Di Vaio to block him from tapping in a Massimo Marazzina cross from the left, getting kicked in the head for his trouble. The Roma goalkeeper got a nasty knock to the back of his head that required stitches and left him dazed, so he had to be replaced by fellow Brazilian Artur for a Serie A debut.

However, Roma took the lead with their first real chance of the second half from Totti. A long free kick was put back in towards the back post where Totti trapped it and thumped a low right-foot drive past Antonioli from six yards.

Zenoni did very well to intercept Cicinho's perfect chipped pass for Vucinic, but Bologna had a sustained period of pressure with Carrus' shot charged down and Mihajlovic threw on Bernacci for a trident attack.

There was anger at the Dall'Ara on 83 minutes when Marazzina was sent clear on goal, but was stopped by an incorrect offside flag. Di Vaio's audacious dipping attempt went over.

Pizarro was booked for a futile late tackle and his yellow card means he'll be suspended for the Rome derby.

The game remained in the balance right to the end, as Di Vaio's volley took a deflection off Juan to dribble past the near post with Artur totally stranded.

Roma never entirely managed to clear the resulting corner and Di Vaio's cross was rather spectacularly nodded into his own net by Cicinho. It was an oddly impressive diving header seemingly under no pressure at all from Bologna shirts!
