Sampdoria ended the game with nine men as they were hammered by Atalanta.
The Oroboci went into this game having lost two on the trot between Serie A and the Coppa Italia, but Samp had a Jekyll and Hyde situation as they were one of only three teams still without a League win despite crushing Kaunas in the UEFA Cup. There was extra spice to this match as Gigi Del Neri famously clashed with Antonio Cassano while both were at Roma. The Blucerchiati were missing the injured Hugo Campagnaro and Angelo Palombo.
Sampdoria hadn't won in Bergamo since 1997-98 and Atalanta hadn't conceded a goal on home turf all season.
Antonio Cassano opened the scoring seven minutes in. Emiliano Bonazzoli flicked on an Accardi pass to send FantAntonio through the middle, where he nutmegged Talamonti, rode another tackle and placed a right-foot finish past Ferdinando Coppola.
Atalanta equalised with a well-worked goal. Ferreira Pinto knocked down the ball and Cristiano Doni flicked it on for Sergio Floccari's cool finish.
Moments later the Orobici almost took the lead with Floccari flashing his angled drive across the face of goal.
It was only a warning, as soon after Garics turned the game around completely. Doni was again the creator, spreading the play out to the right channel where Garics was unmarked to smash a right-foot strike into the far corner.
There was a vicious argument between Cassano and Doni in first half stoppages and the referee had to intervene as it almost got physical.
Antonio Mirante captured a Doni free kick after the break, but there was controversy as the referee awarded a penalty to Sampdoria. It was an odd decision, as Bonazzoli seemed to be holding on to Talamonti's shirt more than the other way round. Nonetheless, Cassano sent Coppola the wrong way with his penalty.
Sampdoria went down to 10 men, as Accardi foolishly went into a challenge with his arm after he had already been booked.
Atalanta took advantage of the situation and restored their lead with Floccari's second of the match. Doni sparked the move again and Simone Padoin provided the assist from the left flank.
Sampdoria finished the match with nine men on the field, as Daniele Dessena saw red for a foul on Doni.
Doni finally got his name on the scoresheet by toe-poking in a Floccari assist.
