| Cristian Zapata scored a last-gasp goal on his 21st birthday to give Udinese a dramatic victory over Parma. The Friulani have had a Jekyll and Hyde start to the season, capable of beating Juventus and holding Inter as well as losing to Napoli and Genoa. Parma have been even worse, although midweek the 2-0 over Torino finally secured their first win. Last term this tie was a spectacular 3-3 scoreline and Parma had not won here since 2001.
Antonio Floro Flores was preferred to Fabio Quagliarella, while Samir Handanovic kept his place despite a poor performance on Wednesday. Udinese thought they had taken the lead on 12 minutes, but Fernando Couto performed a decisive goalline clearance to keep out a Floro Flores half-volley from close range. Nicola Pavarini parried another Floro Flores attempt into the path of Dossena, who was unable to turn into an empty net, and Gyan Asamoah was halted for an incorrect offside. On 33 minutes Dossena's cross found Floro Flores at the back post, but incredibly his header into the ground was wide from a yard out. Gaetano D'Agostino's free kick skimmed the base of the far post in first half stoppages. Antonio Di Natale tested Pavarini from distance and Floro Flores felt he deserved a penalty for Couto's challenge. Giandomenico Mesto almost scored by accident, as his cross-shot smacked against the base of the near post with the goalkeeper stranded. Quagliarella replaced Asamoah, but Parma got their first real chance when Daniele Dessena drilled off target from a promising position. Against the run of play, the Gialloblu broke through at the Stadio Friuli. Davide Matteini combined with Castellini and Bernardo Corradi swept low into the net from seven yards. Udinese equalised with Quagliarella's first goal in an Udinese jersey, scored in chaotic circumstances. Antonio Di Natale's cutback was not dealt with effectively and Quagliarella was quick to pounce on the loose ball from point-blank range. Yet Parma still risked a victory, as Matteini fired straight at Handanovic from nine yards. Nicola Pavarini went off injured so veteran Luca Bucci played the final minutes for Parma. In the last minute of stoppages, Cristian Zapata gave Udinese a fully deserved victory on his 21st birthday. A cross looped over the defence towards the back post, where he volleyed in from a couple of yards. |
