| Udinese stumbled in the race for the Champions League and had to fight back for a point at Siena. Both these sides have been on fine form of late, so this was a highly unpredictable encounter. Robur were undefeated in three and kept two consecutive clean sheets, while the Friulani were in the thick of the race for a Champions League spot. Mario Frick and Paul Codrea sat out bans for the home side, though Udinese - playing in an all-yellow away strip - had to reshuffle the defence with Diaz Felipe and Cristian Zapata suspended.
Christian Rigano' stung Samir Handanovic's palms and Alex Manninger denied a Giandomenico Mesto angled drive. Both sides also had penalty appeals in the opening 15 minutes for Simone Pepe's challenge on Massimo Maccarone and a Rossi handling offence. Fabio Quagliarella drilled wide after running on to Antonio Di Natale's assist, then Manninger did just enough to prod the ball off Di Natale's foot as he was lining up the shot from seven yards. On 21 minutes Udinese went so close to an opener, as Di Natale sparked a counter for Dossena to crack a shot against the far post. Dossena continued to prove a danger and brought a tough save out of Manninger with his header. Siena picked up the pace after the break as Handanovic blocked a Rigano' header and Simone Loria turned his effort just wide. Quagliarella thought he had given Udinese the lead, but it was disallowed for an offside position. Siena introduced Houssine Kharja and he gave his team a surprise lead four minutes later. The French-Moroccan unleashed a screamer of a left-foot strike from 25 metres that whistled past Manninger low into the near corner. Maccarone almost made it 2-0 as he went on the counter and Handanovic blocked his right-foot finish. Udinese had their own supersub, as Antonio Floro Flores came off the bench to redirect a charged down Di Natale attempt from just inside the area with his right foot. Di Natale was ready to put his team 2-1 up on 82 minutes, but Manninger flew to fingertip the header out from under the crossbar with a stunning save. Soon after Simone Pepe flashed across the face of goal and Quagliarella just failed to get the final touch at the other post. |
