Vincenzo Montella marked his Sampdoria comeback with a spectacular winner.
Walter Mazzarri has already had a fine start to his Samp career in the Intertoto Cup and UEFA preliminary round, so he was hoping to repeat last year's 2-0 victory at the Stadio Franchi. Siena also had a new man in charge, former Atalanta boss Andrea Mandorlini. Antonio Cassano remained in Genoa to continue his fitness training along with Emiliano Bonazzoli, Pietro Accardi and Mirko Pieri. Enrico Chiesa faced his former club and ex-Samp teammate Vincenzo Montella.
After four minutes Andrea Caracciolo's angled drive was smothered and Claudio Bellucci smashed across the face of goal. A weak Ziegler header was held, Daniele Portanova charged down Bellucci's effort and Alex Manninger came rushing out to close down Campagnaro. Sampdoria took the lead on 34 minutes with summer signing Bellucci. The former Bologna hitman hit a fearsome left-foot shot from outside the area that lifted mercilessly over Manninger into the far top corner. Gennaro Delvecchio's header threatened from a Ziegler corner kick and at the other end Simone Loria nodded over. Sampdoria could've made it 2-0 straight after the restart, but Ziegler chipped a cross up for Bellucci's header that came off the inside of the upright. Luca Castellazzi punched away a long free kick from Milan-owned defender Leandro Grimi. Sampdoria lost goalkeeper Castellazzi to a muscular problem in the back of his thigh, so former Siena man Antonio Mirante came on instead. His first task was to pluck the ball out the back of the net, as substitute Corvia's precise looping header sailed into the far top corner. Another former Roma player came on and hit the back of the net, as Montella marked his Blucerchiati comeback with a goal. He combined with Sergio Volpi and thumped in the volley with his weaker right foot. |
