| It was a tale of two howlers at the Stadio Franchi, as the goalkeepers gifted their opponents with a share of the points. These were desperate times for both clubs, as Mario Beretta aimed for his first win since returning to the club, while Delio Rossi knew he risked the sack after Lazio's disastrous run of results, including a midweek 2-1 Champions League loss to Olympiacos. Massimo Mutarelli sat out a ban and Tommaso Rocchi was not 100 per cent fit, so he made way for Stephen Makinwa.
Aleksander Kolarov clipped the outside of the upright with one of his trademark free kicks. Siena shot themselves in the foot seconds later. Goalkeeper Alex Manninger, returned to the side after Beretta took charge, aimed a weak backpass to Simone Loria and Goran Pandev pounced to roll the ball into an empty net. Lazio decided to return the favour with a howler from veteran goalkeeper and captain Marco Ballotta. The 'keeper comically fumbled a simple ball floated into the box and it was child's play for Massimo Maccarone to turn in undisturbed. The Biancocelesti thought they had restored their advantage moments later. Fabio Firmani's angled drive smacked the far post and when Makinwa turned in the rebound he was offside. Another Kolarov free kick took a deflection off the defensive wall to skim the frame of the goal. Mario Frick's low ball flashed across the face of goal and Valon Behrami did brilliantly to clear before Maccarone could tap in at the far post. Manninger made a mess of Gaby Mudingayi's cross, but Firmani blasted over an open goal. Moments later Siena almost scored another rather silly strike, as a poor clearance turned into an assist for new entry Forestieri. Tommaso Rocchi came on as a substitute and went close from a corner kick late on, testing Manninger. |
