| Siena celebrated their first victory of the season against 10-man Empoli in this Tuscan derby and Coach Andrea Mandorlini finally had his career first Serie A win. This was a local derby between two Tuscan clubs having difficulties so far this season. Robur were still chasing their first win, but Empoli boosted their credentials with a 3-1 victory over Palermo last week. Gigi Cagni fielded a second string side in the UEFA Cup midweek and his men were turned over 3-0 by FC Zurich. Former Siena man Luca Antonini wasted a good early chance by blazing over clear on goal, then Dmitrios Eleftheropoulos did well to deny Under-21 international starlet Sebastian Giovinco's left-foot strike, but Rossettini's defensive error could have cost them dearly. Cristian Bucchi threatened with a fine turn and Massimo Maccarone's right-foot volley was not far off the target. Just before half-time Daniele Balli was called into a low one-handed save on Jarolim's volley and Vittorio Tosto went off with a muscular injury. After the restart Maccarone gathered a looping Daniele Galloppa header, but blasted straight at Balli from point-blank range. Tomas Locatelli replaced Paul Codrea and his low drive skimmed the base of the upright. The game turned on the hour mark, as Maccarone sprinted into the area and was brought down by a mistimed Daniele Adani tackle. The former Inter defender saw red and ex-Empoli star Maccarone converted the penalty with Balli rooted to the spot. The tension rose in the Empoli squad, as Nicola Ascoli exchanged words with Coach Gigi Cagni when he was substituted. Ascoli had only come on before the break for Vittorio Tosto's injury. Locatelli put the result under lock and key when he dribbled between two defenders in the area and lifted his precise shot over the advancing goalkeeper. Galloppa celebrated his first Serie A goal as he gathered from Locatelli and swept a low left-foot angled drive into the far corner. |
