Alessandro Rosina converted two penalties to send Torino on their way to a desperately-needed six-point victory against fellow drop candidates Reggina.
The relegation battle was hotting up with the Amaranto's revival and a Toro team on the slide. They fought back from 2-0 down to hold Atalanta away last week, perching them just above the drop zone and were unbeaten in four.
The Granata were the draw specialists of Serie A with just 17 goals scored all season, but Nicola Ventola and Alvaro Recoba were still injured along with suspended Simone Barone, Paolo Zanetti and Paolo Hernan Dellafiore, but January signings Marco Pisano and Aimo Diana were thrown straight in.
After just 40 seconds Bruno Cirillo had a great chance, nodding a free kick inches over the bar. Matteo Sereni punched a Franco Brienza strike away, but the referee pointed to the spot on 23 minutes.
Cirillo was judged to have brought down Nikola Lazetic in the box and Alessandro Rosina stepped up to send Andrea Campagnolo the wrong way with a delicately taken kick.
Toro doubled their advantage when a Vincenzo Grella mistake turned into an assist for Roberto Stellone, who curled a fine left-foot finish into the top corner from the edge of the box.
Nicola Amoruso was an injury doubt and marked his comeback with a header from a corner kick to get Reggina back into the game.
Brienza threatened to complete the turnaround seconds later, his effort from distance flashing past the post. Amoruso failed to make the most of fellow substiute Emil Halfredsson's assist, finding only the goalkeeper's foot.
The linesman awarded a penalty for Carlos Valdez's push on Gianluca Comotto as the two charged into the box. Rosina stepped up for the second time and decided to chip it with his left foot.
