Reggina demolished Siena in a shock result, as the Tuscans were coming off three straight victories.
This was a relegation dogfight and Siena were decidedly the favourites after three wins on the trot, even if Massimo Maccarone was suspended. New Reggina boss Nevio Orlandi was hoping for better luck than his debut last week, a 2-0 defeat at leaders Inter, though Luca Tognozzi sat out a ban.
Last season Robur conquered the Granillo 1-0 with Valerio Bertotto's goal in a game with two red cards and a saved Ciccio Cozza penalty.
Yet Reggina got off to a blistering start and took a deserved lead after nine minutes. A scuffed volley at the back post turned into an assist for Franco Brienza to tap in from six yards.
Cozza doubled their advantage with one of his trademark curling free kicks from 20 metres, but Alex Manninger was very slow to get to the ball at the near post.
Brienza completed his brace with a simple finish, as Cozza's free kick found an Emanuele Cascione header cleared off the line by Bertotto, but only as far as the former Palermo player.
Manninger parried a couple of Cozza attempts before half-time, then had his palms stung by a Cascione snapshot from the edge of the box.
Reggina made it 4-0 with a Simone Missiroli angled drive, as Siena were simply not at the Granillo.
